The protagonist, a third-rate civil servant, lived the life expected of him by those around him. However, due to his own excellence, he felt an overwhelming sense of emptiness. The only moment in his life that made his heart race was when he accidentally bumped shoulders with a woman on the street and heard her scream.
Seeking to relive that pleasure once more, he boarded a crowded train and, despite his inexperience, gave in to his dark desires.
