About Roots of Harmony
Roots of Harmony (RoH) is a distinctive text-based 4X strategy game where you guide a fledgling colony through ideological choices and territorial conquests. Every decision—ranging from what buildings to construct, which disciples to recruit, to the beliefs you adopt—impacts not only your followers but also the procedurally generated island itself. The game combines a board game-like movement system with turn-based tactical battles, encouraging exploration of unique locations such as altars, mines, plantations, and dungeons. Replayability is a core focus, with randomized victory conditions and dynamically shifting challenges influenced by your actions. Provoking allied tribes, embracing lifestyles contrary to your neighbors, or even illicit activities in sacred places can all escalate the difficulty, demanding thoughtful strategy and adaptation. The game’s humor and philosophical undertones enrich its atmosphere, while a gradual introduction of mechanics ensures a smooth learning curve across three modes: Standard, New Game+, and Challenges. At the start, you select one of twelve doctrines dictating your colony’s moral compass—ranging from altruistic to despotic, rational to mystic, or collectivist to individualist—which shapes unit recruitment, perks, events, and resource priorities. Resources play a dual role, mirroring your ethical decisions and fueling construction and production chains like the Pillory. The island is far from uninhabited; tribal factions with alliances and procedural units contest your expansion, launching waves of invaders that test your strategic planning. Combat operates as an auto-battler system where pre-battle commands—such as unit positioning, attack style, and blessings—are crucial, though battles unfold autonomously. Developed by a solo creator using a custom engine, Roots of Harmony boasts deep gameplay beneath its text and ASCII art presentation. - Once the game is finished downloading, right click the .zip file and click on “Extract to Roots of Harmony.zip” (To do this you will need 7-Zip, which you can get here, or you can use the built in windows extractor).
- Double click inside the Roots of Harmony folder and run the setup application. Accept the EULA, and install the game. Then, launch the game through the desktop shortcut.
