No Vacation for an Executioner is a retro-inspired Horror Action-RPG set in the late 17th century, following a disillusioned executioner who abandons his grim duties only to face a monstrous uprising unleashed by mysterious “Gloomy Oil.” Drawing inspiration from Claude Cueni’s The Hangman of Paris and the haunting paintings of Zdzisław Beksiński, this solo-developed indie title delivers a unique blend of survival horror and RPG mechanics wrapped in a distinct art style that merges sketch-like and realistic Baroque visuals. Players will navigate a dark, twisted world with gameplay reminiscent of PS2 classics like Resident Evil 4 and Silent Hill, featuring intentionally retro controls that emphasize strategic combat over straightforward melee attacks. A gamepad is recommended for the best experience, though keyboard and mouse options are supported, with a demo available to ensure players are comfortable with the control scheme. The gameplay centers on mastering a combat system that rewards precise stabs, backstabs, and well-timed parries to trigger powerful execution hits, alongside tactical use of firearms. An attire system allows players to customize their look with various period-appropriate outfits and hats, each offering functional benefits. Players also gather and convert items into valuable resources such as bullets and herbs to aid their survival. The game features multiple endings—more than four—with playtimes ranging from 5 to 10 hours depending on the choices made and endings pursued. Unlike souls-like titles, progression here depends on survival tactics rather than experience farming, creating a tense and immersive experience where every encounter counts.
